Through a few select examples, this chapter highlights art movements that use the potential of art to develop and sometimes implement solutions for ecological and social issues. It briefly introduces the outstanding contributions of the artists Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison, the ecological and social engagement of art collectives such as Ala Plástica and WochenKlausur, as well as the concept of upcycling as a means of reducing waste in the art sector. It also aims to shed light on the discrepancy within the art world, which, on one hand, critically and extensively addresses the challenge of the climate crisis, while on the other hand, significantly contributes to resource waste and exploitation. Ultimately, this chapter is a gentle call for the responsible use of resources and the potential of art to foster real change.
