This chapter explores an ecological approach to arts engagement, rooted in the idea of cultural re-wilding. Focused on a case study of Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art’s Residents programme, this text demonstrates how a gallery can instigate alternative modes of agency, relationality, and sustainability with communities, centred on supporting and resourcing structurally marginalised voices and practices. Residents was initiated in 2021 in response to (a) local needs and (b) the broader crisis of representation within the arts, brought into sharp focus by the Black Lives Matter movement. It involved ten local communities of practice re-designing and simultaneously inhabiting space at Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art, in order to develop and sustain new inclusive ecologies and modes of operation.
