In educational institutions, timetabling is one of the most complex problems due to the number of variables that need to be evaluated and optimised, such as time, resources and constraints of both students and teachers. For this reason, this study provides definitions and limitations associated with the problem of scheduling. This is followed by a bibliographical review of the traditional methods used in this field. Then, the use of artificial intelligence in university scheduling is analysed from a bibliographic database. Finally, the perspectives, trends and future directions of university scheduling are discussed.
