This paper aims to analyze the “critical thinkers” approach to evaluate its fundamental features and determine the alignment of these characteristics with current university actions. Using the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) as a case study, empirical content is provided to assess how critical thinking principles are integrated into engineering education. Incentives and barriers are analyzed proposing actions to enhance the role of critical thinking in motivating faculty and students as agents of sustainable transformation within their communities.
