Open-Source Tools to Support Local Circular Co-design

The Corvetto-Chiaravalle area in the southern part of the municipality of Milan sees highly innovative initiatives for territorial and urban regeneration practices and the involvement of communities settled in peripheral areas. The chapter presents the state of progress of co-design support devices aimed at implementing and promoting synergies among these practices, between them and the territory that hosts them in the direction of a local circular economy. These devices are part of Bioloop project results, a research proposal that won the Polisocial2023 award call (organized by the “Politecnico di Milano”), which aims to lay the foundations in the Cascina Nosedo Off Campus of an experimental laboratory for local and participatory circular economy. In particular, the program proposes the development of tools and information capable of assisting the co-design of artefacts for circular production value chains (production, transformation, consumption, waste management). These activities will be consistent with generative environmental design processes, i.e. an approach to design at various scales capable of activating a local workforce starting from practices oriented towards self-sustainability and respectful of the regenerative cycles of local natural ecosystems. The chapter presents a project support infrastructure based on three interlinked nodes of public use and based on open-source tools and open-data: The LA refers to an open Territorial Information System based on Free and Open Source Geographic Information System (FOS GIS). It is a database that collects information on the outgoing flows from the activities present in the area, both anthropogenic and natural, and on the renewable resources available. Outgoing flows refer to scraps, surpluses, and waste. The primary purpose of LA is to allow, through awareness of the actual availability of resources in the area, to propose and verify the transferability of good practices with the aim of promoting the creation of local micro-entrepreneurship. The success of initiatives linked to the circular economy can only depend on the availability of local resources, suitable for recovery, transformation, and renewed use as secondary materials. To encourage their recovery, it is therefore appropriate that recycling and reuse strategies for the flows present in the LA are collected and proposed, derived from projects already developed (best practices) and/or from studies conducted within the borders of the research project. This archive constitutes the Peri-urban Material Library (PML), an open database collecting information on the possible transformations that could be implemented on the mapped materials to support co-design initiatives oriented towards local actor’s needs. These co-design activities lay the foundation for the third open-source device, an Open-source Project Hub (OSPH), a projects’ archive of design proposals promoted by the Off Campus that shares the implementability by local actors. OSPH is based on the possibilities of using the available resources mapped in AL and the possible transformations present in the PML to propose solutions aimed at activating regenerative and participatory circular economies.
