The ecological transition of energy production and supply systems, as well as the evolution towards forms of energy self-sufficiency of cities and territories, represent the most current project areas for those who intend to face the challenge of the sustainable reconversion of anthropic communities. A challenge that poses particular needs for evaluation, validation, and control of the expected results in the event that the object of intervention consists of territories characterised by high landscape and historical-architectural quality, factors that contribute to determining a high environmental value, culturally recognised, with which any transformative intervention must necessarily deal in terms of compatibility, protection, and conservation of territorial and urban quality. The opportunities offered by the “green” reconversion instruments envisaged by the introduction of the Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) and by the Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) allow us to glimpse the possibility that these places will be the subject of significant transformative interventions in the immediate future, linked on the one hand to the construction of systems for the production of energy from renewable sources, on the other to the restructuring of more or less extensive portions of the environmental and/or urban heritage. There is a need to address these changes, which are inevitable if one wishes to achieve energy sustainability objectives from a carbon neutral perspective, through the adoption of programming and design methodologies and tools capable of coordinating the different instances within a true transformation and regeneration program, the only instrument capable of guaranteeing an effective valorisation of the territories without renouncing the conservation of their landscape and urban characteristics (think of the smaller historical centres of the Italian internal areas), and essential to support, in addition to self-production energy, also the socio-economic and tourism relaunch. A process in which architects take on the role of building the requirements framework, coordinating the different instances and transforming them into shared solutions.
