A Novel Collaborative Stakeholder Development Tool Using Energy System Optimisation and Visual Interface for Workshop Facilitation

Urban centres are pivotal in addressing climate change, with their energy consumption patterns and governance structures positioning them uniquely to lead decarbonisation efforts. This chapter explores the role of cities in achieving broader decarbonisation goals, emphasising their potential as catalysts for environmental change. It introduces a novel interactive stakeholder engagement tool designed for collaborative urban energy planning, demonstrating through a hypothetical case study its effectiveness in identifying sustainable energy pathways and facilitating trade-offs among diverse stakeholders. The study underscores the complexity of urban energy systems and highlights the necessity of a holistic planning approach that incorporates technological innovation, policy reform, and shifts in societal behaviour. By showcasing the value of involving a wide array of stakeholders in the planning process, this research contributes to the understanding of sustainable urban development and advocates for cities to be at the forefront of climate action. Through collective efforts, cities can lead in the transition towards a carbon-neutral future, creating more sustainable, resilient, and liveable urban environments.
