In these lecture notes we introduce the basic geometric and topological elements for the foundations of topological matter. This new field of condensed matter which ranges from topological quantum phases to topological insulators and topological semimetals has undergone an impressive development in the last years, motivated by its potential applications to spintronics and quantum computation. We outline the main mathematical foundations of the new field.
