Emerging Technologies in Occupational Safety and Health: Identification, Use and Perception by OSH Professionals in Portugal

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is paramount for ensuring workers’ well-being and organizational productivity. This study investigates the use and perception of emerging technologies by OSH professionals in Portugal, focusing on technologies like Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Inter- net of Things, and wearable devices. A deductive approach was employed, utilizing questionnaires to assess OSH professionals’ perceptions. Statistical analyses were conducted, revealing positive perceptions of emerging OSH technologies’ benefits, along with challenges such as training and situational awareness. Perceptions varied based on participants’ qualifications and age. The study underscores the importance of effective implementation strategies and ethical considerations for responsible adoption of emerging technologies, essential for fostering safer and healthier work environments. This research provides insights into the adoption of emerging OSH technologies in Portugal and highlights the need for tailored training programs and awareness campaigns to facilitate their effective integration.
