Examining M-Learning Trends Among University Students—Mobile Devices in Students’ Study and Life

The study investigates the use of mobile devices for educational purposes among university students, focusing on 51 individuals from computer science and pedagogy specializations at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland. The research explores the frequency and purposes of mobile device usage, such as participation in e-courses, MOOCs, and educational apps like Duolingo. It also examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on these practices, identifying key features and perceived drawbacks of mobile learning. Five research questions guide the inquiry, addressing usage frequency, priority purposes, pandemic effects, important m-learning features, and perceived negative aspects. Namely: RQ1: What is the frequency of use of mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, notebooks)? RQ2: What are the highest priority purposes for the use of mobile devices—educational purposes, e.g. to participate in e-courses and MOOCs, to use mobile learning applications, i.e. Duolingo? RQ3: What is the students’ self-assessment of how the pandemic has affected the frequency of use and which mobile devices? RQ4: What features of teaching m-learning are most important to students? RQ5: What negative features of teaching m-learning do students perceive? Statistical inference and descriptive analysis are employed to test hypotheses and compare results. The findings provide insights that can inform further research across different faculties and international contexts.
