In the African and Asian continents, peste des petits ruminants (PPR) remained endemic and is affecting small ruminants (sheep and goats), highlighting serious economic, social, and health problem. Additionally, the disease impacts the livestock and underscores the economy, poverty alleviation, and sustained family nutrition. Wild artiodactyls can also be stricken with this disease, thus making PPR a conservation concern. Once introduced, the PPR virus (PPRV) can infect up to 90% of an animal herd and can be lethal in 30–70% of infected animals, causing an estimated US$ 2.1 billion economic loss per year. Despite the existence and application of an effective live-attenuated vaccine against PPRV, the disease continues to spread, with recent outbreaks in Georgia (2016) and Bulgaria (2018) that pose a serious threat to Europe besides Africa and Asia. To reach the aim of PPRV eradication set for 2030 by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), vaccination campaigns need strong collaboration efforts between farmers, the scientific community, governments, and pharmaceutical companies, among others. In this chapter, we recapitulate different vaccination strategies against PPRV and discuss their pros and cons in achieving the global eradication program for PPR.
