Geological and Technological Factors of Premature Well Watering During the Initial Stages of Field Development

The research presents a comprehensive geological and operational analysis to assess the risks of premature well watering in areas planned for drilling within the Shaim oil and gas field. To investigate the influence of geological structure on production water content, the authors analyzed paleogeographic features of sediment accumulation in productive layers, constructed detailed lithofacies maps, and identified tectonic faults based on the interpretation of detailed seismic data. The analysis of the gathered data allowed the authors to identify key factors causing premature watering, which include heterogeneous facies structures and a complex system of tectonic faults. Additionally, the authors analyzed the energy state of the field and the drilled wells and created maps of current and cumulative extraction and water content, which were then compared with the map of remaining movable oil reserves. Moreover, the authors conducted a correlation analysis to study the hydrodynamic connection between neighboring wells and tectonic faults. Based on the maps and correlations obtained, the authors drew conclusions regarding the influence of technological factors on well water content. During the research, the authors identified key criteria influencing well water content, ranked areas by the degree of risk for premature watering, and provided recommendations for optimizing the development system, considering the geological characteristics of the fields.
