Sierra Leone’s peace consolidation efforts were tested by two major incidents: the protests on 8 to 10 August 2002 and the attempted coup d’état on 26 November 2023. The government and its national security institutions, the individuals who orchestrated the incidents and their allies, and the media utilised various approaches of communication and reporting frames to pass on information to people. This chapter analyses the different communication and reporting approaches utilised during the two incidents and the emerged narratives. Two research questions were asked: How did the government communicate during the two incidents? How did the media report on the two incidents? The research design is qualitative, and the methods used are key informant interviews, observation and content analysis. The framing theory and concepts in peace and conflict resolution, media and conflict reporting, crisis management and communication guided the study. The chapter shows that the parties to the conflict used various communication approaches based on their perceived frames and the interests and the results they sought to achieve.
