This chapter examines issues related to freedom of expression in Morocco, focusing on print journalism and cinema, two domains that have generated intense controversy and that involve a complicated dynamic among financial interests, the public, the state, and the creative will of journalists and filmmakers. Looking at disputes in both domains, I discuss several provocative films and then turn to freedom of expression in the press, looking at humor that challenges established views, and issues around public protests, the monarchy, and defamation. Following the accession to the throne of Muhammad VI in 1999, there was some progress in freedom of expression generally, although with steps forward and backward. Finally I suggest some general lessons with regard to freedom of expression that may come from juxtaposing the sectors of cinema and journalism.
