This chapter explores Moroccan cinema around the turn of the twenty-first century, seeking to understand the contrast between the film sector’s perilous infrastructural and economic circumstances and the growing interest of Moroccan audiences in Moroccan films. After an introduction that brings forward the main characteristics of Moroccan cinema during this period, the chapter discusses the shifting composition of the audience and then examines four important films of the 1990s, distilling characteristics of these films that attracted Moroccan audiences and pointing to some other aspects—shifting settings and characters, the representation of women, and the themes of migration and political repression. In an appendix are two short texts where I was asked to introduce Moroccan films to a US audience.
