Moroccan cinema is looked at here in the regional context of its Maghreb neighbors, Algeria and Tunisia. Taking an historical perspective, this chapter explores the region’s cinemas during the colonial period, the first decades of independence, and up to the turn of the century. While these three countries share much in the way of culture and history, they differ in significant ways and the differences in their film sectors are very substantial, with each facing some particular problems and possessing different structural and human resources. The chapter ends with a brief discussion of the characteristics of Moroccan cinema during the 1990s and its prospects as it enters the twenty-first century.
