Advanced Simulation and Digital Twin technology as technological pillars of Industry 4.0, involve the creation of virtual representations of physical objects, processes, or systems, allowing for real-time communication between the physical and virtual counterparts. Furthermore, as the industrial and manufacturing landscape is shifting towards Industry 5.0 and Human-Centric Smart Manufacturing, investments are being made to enhance interactions between Operators and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). However, industrial Metaverse reinforces these interactions as it enables human immersion and supports co-existence into virtual worlds. Moreover, it explores the promising relationships between CPS through their digital twins. Thus, this chapter introduces the concept of Industrial Metaverse towards Human-centric Smart Manufacturing, which is considered as a virtual space where industrial processes and operations are simulated and optimized based among others on the concept of Digital Twins, a key enabling and back-bone technology of the Metaverse. Furthermore, challenges and opportunities for industrial and smart manufacturing stakeholders will be identified. Finally, service-oriented architectures for digital twins which incorporate Metaverse-enabled platforms for creating additional value and interactions with CPS will be presented.
