This chapter delivers a novel reading of Fogarty’s amatory poetics within a wider body of scholarship that has focused somewhat marginally, if at all, on his verse of platonic love, romantic relationships, sexual encounters, and other forms of emotional and bodily intimacy. Sumner demonstrates that for Fogarty, love is an expansive, multitudinous, variable, and linguistically and socially complex form. By reading Fogarty against the tradition of romantic poetry, Sumner argues that his poetry challenges the semantic or stylistic conventions usually suggested by the term ‘love poetry’ in the Western literary tradition.
