Stabilometric Parameters in Pregnant Women in First, Second, and Third Trimester

Despite the importance of postural changes during pregnancy in women, few studies focus on postural oscillations obtained with stabilometry. We recorded the center of pressure displacement of 90 pregnant women, 30 per trimester, using a pressure platform. Women stood in quiet stance for 90 s. Stabilometric tests were performed with eyes open and eyes closed. Additionally, pain history of the corporal segments was registered with a customized questionnaire. Results show a larger COP displacement on the anteroposterior axes with eyes closed on all groups. Statistical analysis showed a significant increase in COP trajectory when comparing eyes opened and eyes closed tests for the second and third trimester. Overall, oscillations increase in amplitude with pregnancy progression >29%. Pain appeared more intense during the second trimester in the neck, lower back, knees, and feet. Our study contributes with data describing the balance decrease during pregnancy that could be used to implement preventive actions and methods according to the gestational stage.
