Deskilling: The Atrophy of Cognitive and Social Aptitudes

Digital distraction and dependence degrade our capacity for reflective self-direction. The AI-enabled attention economy also undermines the development of diverse cognitive and social skills that enhance agency. There can be no doubt that digital technologies greatly augment many human faculties. But they also produce widespread deskilling. Resisting and reversing this trend is crucial for human flourishing. It is mistaken to believe that technological fixes can do the job for us.
