3D Ultrasound Volume Acquisition for Multimodal Biometric Recognition Systems Based on Palmprint and Veins Pattern

Multimodal biometric systems are more and more investigated because are showing more effective than unimodal systems, in terms of universality, security and recognition rate. Ultrasound is showing a very attractive technology compared to the optical ones, because it allows to obtain 3D information of human body and then to achieve more accurate biometric information. In this work, a new database that contains information on both palmprint and palm vein is created. 3D images are acquired by exploiting water as coupling medium. Palmprint verification experiments are carried out by performing comparisons between methods with 2D and 3D templates, respectively. Experimental results, carried out on a database composed of about 600 samples collected from 30 volunteers, demonstrated that the system shows very good performance in terms of recognition rate (EER = 0.34%).
