Chromosomal Variation

This chapter presents in some detail the range of chromosomal variation within Melampodium. Surveys over several decades have resulted in chromosome numbers being determined for all 40 species, including those described more recently. The range of haploid numbers is broad with n = 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 18, 20, 23, 24, 27, 28, 30, and 33. Karyotypes have also been documented for all species of the genus, a necessary step for assessing the origins of the polyploids from diploid ancestors. A massive addition of new populational cytological data from more than 2700 plants in over 190 populations has revealed M. leucanthum and M. cinereum to contain diploid (n = 10) and tetraploid (n = 20) autopolyploid races. The third species in this complex, M. argophyllum, has now been documented as uniformly hexaploid (n = 30).
