This article presents the platform developed within the framework of the research project “M.EL.O.S.,” co-funded by Greece and the European Union through the Greece 2.0 programme and the Recovery and Resilience Fund. The project aims to create a specialized music ontology with innovative features, allowing the automatic extraction and integration of qualitative attributes from musical scores. By relying on the open-source ReasonableGraph (RG) platform, the project builds a comprehensive tool for managing and semantically organizing digital music collections. The theoretical foundations of the platform rest on ontology management, metadata standards, and linked data principles, which facilitate interoperability and ensure open and interconnected datasets. This approach aligns with current trends in digital humanities and cultural heritage management, promoting standardized, accessible, and reusable data in music and beyond. At the core of the project is the development of a music ontology that addresses the specific needs of music collections, enabling enhanced cataloging, retrieval, and display of musical documents. These documents range from scores and performances to other archival materials like programs, recordings, and concert posters. Through the adaptation of the ReasonableGraph platform, two key products have been developed: the “Local Music Ontology Repository” (TAMO) for managing local collections, and the “Central Music Authority Repository” (KeMKA) for handling centralized, collaborative repositories. These repositories aim to streamline the management of music collections across multiple institutions, offering a scalable solution for the organization and documentation of cultural content. On the practical side, the platform supports a variety of innovative features. It incorporates tools for searching, linking, retrieving, and enriching semantically annotated information, while also facilitating the use of social networks and crowdsourcing for the expansion of collections. Computational music analysis further enhances the platform by automatically extracting qualitative features such as melody, harmony, and timbre from musical works. External data sources, such as Wikidata and VIAF, are also integrated into the system, allowing for automatic updates of information related to musical entities. Moreover, the platform supports user-generated extensions, enabling institutions to customize metadata fields according to local requirements without compromising the integrity of the central repository. The broader impact of the “M.EL.O.S.” project lies in its ambition to fill a significant gap in the international market regarding the availability of repositories that support open and linked data. By fostering collaboration among institutions with music collections, the platform sets a new standard for the management of cultural assets and digital music archives. The platform's unique capabilities, combined with the interdisciplinary research conducted, pave the way for the integration of other institutions and the continuous expansion of the collaborative network. Through workshops, training, and international presentations, the project is gaining recognition as a pivotal tool in the fields of musicology and digital cultural heritage management.
