The chapter discusses the beginning of gas-geochemical studies in the waters of Vietnam and its vicinity. The purpose of the research was to study the fluxes of hydrocarbon and other natural gases and their concentrations in bottom sediments and the near-bottom water. As a result of this work, anomalous concentrations of methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide were noted in the bottom waters of the shelf and slope. The increased content of these gases was also detected in the bottom sediments. This was the first experimental data on active degassing in the zone of the junction of the Sunda shelf and the deep basin of the South China Sea near southeastern Vietnam. According to a complex of geophysical and geological data, this zone has been identified as a tectono-magmatic lineament, active at the present time. In additional, fields of anomalous concentrations of methane, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide are found in the bottom waters within the Cuu Long, Nam Con Son, and West Natuna sedimentary basins. This work currently continue, under the Russian Science Foundation (project no. 24-47-04001, https://rscf.ru/project/24-47-04001 ) and international multilateral project "Methane Fluxes and their Impacts on Climate and Ecosystem in the Indo-Pacific Region (2025–2029)" as a project of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC).
