The Innovation Effects of Engaged Actors in Open Platform Ecosystems

By extending beyond traditional company boundaries, open platform ecosystems introduce novel features worthy of attention, such as the democratic and less predictable nature of innovation involving various actors. Innovation in these ecosystems emerges from interactions between individuals and the system, yet the process that enables this interaction to be innovative requires further understanding. This chapter aims to link actor engagement with resource density in the ecosystem using a Service-Dominant logic framework, focusing on rewards-based crowdfunding due to its highly interactive and interdependent nature. The study develops a model of resource density in open platform ecosystems, illustrating novel connections between resources and innovation mediated by actor engagement. The resulting strategy matrix offers companies actionable innovation strategies for varying actor engagement and resource density levels.
