Effective management of obstetric emergencies requires the coordinated action of a team of caregivers composed of midwives, nurses and medical officers and doctors. Obstetric emergencies are often unforeseeable, and every team taking care of pregnant women should be prepared to respond rapidly and adequately. Obstetric emergencies are very stressful events for the women as well as for the team. Although an excellent command of technical skills is a prerequisite to managing these situations, NTS (non-technical skills) are also essential. NTS are social and cognitive skills that are necessary for safe and effective performance [1]. They include teamwork, communication, situation awareness and task management within the team. High-risk industries, particularly aviation, have recognized the importance of training their crews to manage NTS since the late 1970s. Investigations of aircraft accidents showed that 70% of them involved NTS [2]. Implementing specific training for NTS led to a decrease in adverse events in aviation [3]. NTS play an essential role in avoidable adverse events in maternity care. National reports in the United Kingdom recognized problems in communication and teamwork as a cause of preventable maternal deaths and neonatal asphyxia [4]. In particular, problematic communication and teamwork led junior team members to seek senior support too late, and teams failed to recognize and communicate the severity of the woman’s condition to all members of the obstetric team.
