The United States of America accounts for 4% of the world’s population and 16% of its energy demand (U.S. Energy Information Administration, in Electricity Explained (2024)). Historically the country’s energy demand has been met largely with energy produced from coal, crude oil, and natural gas. As pressures grow to reduce emissions and improve the efficiency and resiliency of domestic energy systems, the focus on geothermal power is increasing in popularity. Despite decades of geothermal research and development, grant funding, and successful installations of geothermal power plants in the United States, the industry faces headwinds, including high start-up costs, long development timelines, and a challenging investment landscape. This chapter discusses these headwinds and explores policies and avenues for improving development costs and timelines through several methods, as well as considering the outreach and engagement efforts that support U.S. geothermal development and increase society’s understanding of the benefits of geothermal energy.
