Mexico has a rich geothermal history and a vibrant present. The national territory has a rich geological setting, including volcanic and extensional regimes, with significant thermal gradients and an estimated high geothermal potential, from which only a fraction has been exploited. To guarantee the success of a geothermal exploitation project, detailed technical exploration is required. However, is this enough? Are there any other key steps to successful use of the resource? In Mexico social interactions with geothermal energy are diverse, ranging from spiritual, traditional uses and economical socio-environmental relationships in geothermal territories, to a lack of public education on geothermal energy, and a few social appropriation initiatives to manage geothermal projects. By highlighting these diverse interactions, the current political and legal framework and academic projects aiming to promote social participation; this chapter underscores the importance and necessity of considering the complexities and subtleties of each socio-environment through social exploration, to empower and involve communities as a key step in the development of any geothermal project.
