From ancient Roman thermal baths to the development of the first geothermal power plant in the world, Italy has always been a forerunner in the geothermal sector. Research in the field is active across the country and the geological features of the region are favorable for harnessing geothermal energy for various uses. This chapter, which is the updated version of a previous edition published in 2019, outlines the geothermal landscape of Italy and delves into public engagement initiatives in the field. It reports on two public engagement exercises, which have been run as part of broader research projects aimed at assessing the geothermal potential of selected Italian territories in Southern and Central Italy in 2012 and 2014. The two case studies rely on a mix of quantitative and qualitative methods and are placed at the intersection of social sciences, public consultation, and multi-stakeholder engagement. A third case is under development at the moment of writing, and it is to be run in the Eolian Islands, in Southern Italy. At a general level, the case studies reveal poor awareness of potential geothermal applications, openness to the technology provided certain adjustments are made, and distrust in decision-makers.
