Capsicum Chlorosis Virus

Ortotospoviruses are destructive viruses that infect a wide range of agricultural and ornamental crops. Capsicum chlorosis virus (CaCV) is an emerging, economically important orthotospovirus with an expanding host range. It is documented to infect mainly solanaceous crops (i.e. pepper, tomato) and some other families, including ornamentals in South East Asia and Australia. It causes the severe symptoms on the fruits and leaves of infected host plants and affects marketable quality. Approximately 10–60% of the CaCV disease incidence was recorded in the vegetable ecosystem. It has a host range and symptomology similar to those of Groundnut bud necrosis virus (GBNV) under natural conditions. The virus is transmitted by four species of thrips (Thysanoptera and, Thripidae) in a persistent propogative manner. Economic concerns for CaCV have evolved over years. Indeed, novel studies need to focus on the model for plant-virus interactions, and major efforts are also required to understand plant-virus coevolution. This review emphasizes the multifaceted management strategies and future concerns for palpable research directions to combat these threats.
