Beet Pseudoyellows Virus

The Beet pseudoyellows virus (BPYV) is a widespread pathogen with a host range that includes crops, weeds, and ornamentals. The virus induces symptoms, such as stunting, unthriftiness, and interveinal yellowing, which can be mistaken for abiotic stress. BPYV belongs to the genus Crinivirus in the family Closteroviridae and is characterized by non-enveloped filamentous viral particles. Transmission occurs through the greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum in a semi-persistent manner. The virus has been documented in several countries, including Central America, Europe, the United States, and New Zealand, and poses a threat to beet crops in these regions. Nucleic acid-based detection methods, particularly RT-PCR, are recommended for BPYV detection owing to their phloem-limited nature. Primers targeting the Hsp70h gene showed higher detection rates than serological methods. High-throughput sequencing allows for comprehensive analysis of viral pathogens in strawberries, providing insights into their genomic structures and functions. It is crucial to address whitefly resistance, implement integrated pest management strategies, and develop resistant crop varieties to manage BPYV and to ensure sustainable crop production.
