Cultural Responsiveness in Relationship Counseling
摘要
Relationship counseling has a unique history, professional identity, and distinctive challenges that both parallel and diverge from the counseling field in general. As a result, cultural responsiveness in relationship counseling both resembles and differs from individual counseling. This chapter integrates the Multicultural Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC; Ratts et al., Multicultural and social justice counseling competencies: Guidelines for the counseling profession. Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, 44(1), 28–48, 2016) with the Six Principles for Multicultural Perspectives (Hutton & Sisko, Multicultural responsiveness in counselling and psychology: Working with Australian populations. Springer Nature, 2020) to help relationship counselors develop awareness, attitudes, knowledge, and skills to serve diverse clients in a culturally responsive manner. Focusing on clinical practice and hands-on applications of such principles, we utilize case examples, clinical experiences, and exercises to address common concerns expressed by relationship counselors working with clients from different cultural backgrounds.
