Cultural responsiveness in research supports fluidity in context with the hope of understanding, engaging, and employing inclusive methods tailored to participants, their environments, and experiences. A culturally responsive researcher is immersed in a systemic quest for knowledge within the framework of science (Ponterotto, Qualitative research in counseling psychology: A primer on research paradigms and philosophy of science. Journal of Counseling Psychology, 52(2), 126–136. https://doi.org/10.1037/0022-0167.52.2.126 , 2005), abiding by a structure regardless of theoretical identity and design, focused on step-by-step approximations seeking to uncover “truth” (Heppner et al., Research design in counselling (3rd ed.). Cengage Learning, 2008). In this cultural responsiveness framework, we explore research in counselling, counselling research methods and design, critical changes made to research practice, a framework for culturally responsive research, equity and access, methods that centre on cultural responsiveness, and a sample assignment. Researchers must be intentional in selecting designs in support of addressing equity, access, and inclusion in research.
