Medical Confounders for Hypercalcemia and Hyperparathyroidism: Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Syndromes, Familial Hypocalciuric Hypercalcemia, Idiopathic Hypercalciuria, and Hyperparathyroidism-Jaw Tumor Syndrome
摘要
As discussed in preceding sections of this publication, establishing the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism and identifying parathyroid hormone (PTH)-dependent hypercalcemia require a thorough history, physical examination, and appropriate laboratory testing to properly identify patients for whom surgical intervention is indicated. In contrast, there are a number of instances in which hypercalcemia can arise from illness that are not conducive to surgical intervention. It is the intent of this chapter to guide readers to be cognizant of these alternative conditions such that only patients appropriate for parathyroid surgery undergo that procedure. In addition, we will provide some general guidelines for treatment where applicable.
