Uromyces (Link) Unger is the second largest rust genus in the order Uredinales and includes several plant pathogens responsible for significant yield losses worldwide. This genus encompasses approximately 1570 species found worldwide. Airborne urediospores of Uromyces spp. play a pivotal role in the transmission of rust disease in most crops. The presence of Uromyces leads to the formation of small orange/yellow or brown pustules resembling rust in infected plant tissues. The development and deployment of rust resistant varieties with pathotype-specific resistance genes against Uromyces have been successfully implemented. However, the stability of this resistance remains uncertain because of the extensive variability and evolution of Uromyces. Intercropping acts as a natural barrier, intercepting rust urediospores carried by wind and reducing their availability to infect faba bean plants. Fungicides, such Chlorothalonil, Tebuconazole, Propiconazole, and dithiocarbamates, such as Mancozeb and Maneb, have proven effective against rust. Nevertheless, the proper timing of fungicide application requires disease monitoring and weather forecasting to ensure economic benefits.
