Species from the genus Nigrospora exhibit remarkable lifestyles, including as plant pathogens. Nigrospora species cause crop diseases like spots and crown rots, contributing to yield loss and food spoilage. Nevertheless, some Nigrospora species are potential biocontrol agents and offer promising biotechnological prospects by producing secondary metabolites and bioactive compounds. This genus is widely distributed worldwide as fungal spores that can be dispersed by wind and rain splashes. Nigrospora sphaerica and N. oryzae are commonly reported plant pathogens, although N. musae has been reported several times more recently. Nigrospora species infect several important crops such as rice, banana, and, more recently, some high-valued crops (e.g., dragon fruits). While pesticides have been shown to manage and mitigate the impact of plant diseases caused by Nigrospora species, there has been an increase in interest in using botanical and biological control agents in Nigrospora disease management. Resistance of the host to Nigrospora species will be an important part of the integrated disease management programs and breeding for disease resistance would be worthwhile. Here, we present an overview of Nigrospora species as economically important plant pathogens.
