The genus Gaeumannomyces, encompassing phytopathogenic fungi with diverse taxonomy, poses a global threat to agriculture. Originating from pivotal research on Gaeumannomyces as a phytopathogenic genus set the stage of exploration, revealing taxa such as Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis and Gaeumannomyces tritici. This genus exhibits a widespread geographical distribution, impacting diverse agricultural ecosystems, with a significant focus on its implications in Asian agriculture, particularly in India. This chapter comprehensively addresses the taxonomy, transmission, host range, symptomatology, pathogenicity, isolation, and identification of Gaeumannomyces species. It also includes the epidemiology of Gaeumannomyces, highlighting the factors influencing its prevalence and severity.
