Epicoccum species are important fungal plant pathogens belonging to the Didymellaceae group. E. nigrum and E. sorghinum are the two most important members of this genus. Epicoccum species have a wide host range and have been reported in many countries. Diseases caused by Epicoccum species can result in yield and quality loss on crops. These losses may be exacerbated by the potential of some Epicoccum species to produce toxins that may be detrimental to animals. Wind, temperature, and water are the most important factors favoring the growth of Epicoccum species and driving the spread of the pathogens. Several studies reported the control of Epicoccum species in vitro (e.g. the use of a bio-fungicide, an essential oil, and other chemical pesticides) but very scarce reports on the management of diseases in the field.
