The main objective of this chapter is to present how the events of 1968 and the occupation of the Maison du Brésil by Brazilian diplomatic agents, both civilian and military, were perceived, and to analyze the consequences of this occupation on the operation of the Maison. To do this, I will first briefly review the trajectory of the building’s construction project during the 1950s. At this stage, Brazil had a markedly developmentalist national policy, whose principles in the field of cultural diplomacy shared the importance of the Cité’s internationalist proposal. I analyze the first years of the House’s operation up to the beginning of the military dictatorship in 1964, when the government began to ignore the statutes that governed it (as well as those of the CIUP) and to monitor its residents. The militaristic logic based on the doctrine of national security came to govern Brazilian policy at all levels. The result was that, coupled with the Brazilian events of 1968 and the events in France, the military government realized that maintaining the Casa da Brasil on French soil did more to discredit the country than actually bring any beneficial results for its image, and eventually legally disengaged itself from its links with the Casa. The article is the result of extensive ongoing primary and secondary source research conducted in France and Brazil as part of the projects, emphasis on diplomatic sources.
