Post-socialist Settlement Developments—the Example of Bucharest
摘要
The societies in the former Soviet Union’s sphere of influence were exposed to two profound processes of upheaval. Firstly, accelerated industrialization in the course of the establishment of the real socialist social system, and then the transformation to a democratic, market-based social system. Both have left deep traces in the cities of this region. The former, among other things, in a standardized building structure, heavy burdens on local environments, the neglect of the building fabric in central parts of the cities, etc. The latter in the form of the simultaneity of western-modern and postmodern settlement developments, on the one hand in the form of extensive suburbanization, and on the other in differentiation and fragmentation phenomena of urban society and its physical manifestations. Bucharest experienced significant changes in its urban landscape after the fall of communism, urban development reflecting broader social, economic, and political changes in post-socialist societies. One element of these processes is the restoration and touristic staging of historical sites.
