Extraction and Characterization of Cellulose from Finger Millet Husk

Utilizing agricultural waste is a viable approach for developing renewable, cost-effective, and sustainable products while tackling waste disposal issues. In this study, we report the extraction and characterization of cellulose from finger millet husk. Cellulose was extracted from finger millet husk by 5% NaOH treatment, followed by bleaching with 5% NaOCl. The cellulose yield after extraction by NaOH and NaOCl from finger millet husk was found to be 28.81%. XRD results show the extraction of very high quality cellulose from finger millet husk. The crystallinity of cellulose (73.58%) was found to be high. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of cellulose showed characteristic morphology that was fibrous in structure. Thus, the findings in this work will encourage researchers to use finger millet husk as a source of low-cost cellulose preparation for various applications.
