It has been noted that, even in democratic South Africa, there have been challenges in the usage of African languages by the media. Thus, this exploratory chapter sought to discuss the usage of African languages in the current South African media landscape, guided by the “Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis” (PRISMA) guidelines. Using a review of the literature, the inception of this chapter has focused on the following objectives: (1) to explore language usage within the South African media context; (2) to identify hurdles affecting the application and usage of African languages in the South African media; and (3) to discover probable strategies to promote the usage of multilingualism by South African media outlets. To achieve the above-mentioned aim of the chapter, databases such as Google Scholar, EBSCOHost, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Sabinet, and Taylor & Francis were accessed by the researchers to retrieve and analyse information from scholarly documents such as peer-reviewed journal articles, books, dissertations, theses, and reports, among others, published between 2012 and 2023. The primary finding of the study revealed that linguistic inequality has negatively affected the usage of African languages in South African media. Thus, this chapter’s discussion contributes to the existing scholarship on the usage of media platforms to promote indigenous African languages in South Africa. The chapter also provides insights into understanding African language media and their role in South African society.
