Novel Advances in Total Hip Arthroplasty

The number of surgical interventions in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is continuously increasing, so that till 2034 it will be doubled. The latest studies highlight that there have been significant advances in modern practices in total hip arthroplasty. The objective of this study is to explore the latest research highlighted by the specialized literature as being novelly advisable in total hip arthroplasty. They refer to the following topics: adverse localized tissue reactions due to corrosion processes in the femoral head-neck junction; dental prophylaxis of patients who have undergone total joint arthroplasty surgery; reducing blood loss in THA using tranexamic acid. The methodology of this study consisted primarily in the analysis of specialized medical literature and the extraction of the most recent works related to the examined topics. For this scope, it was used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The results reveal that adverse localized tissue reactions due to corrosion processes in the femoral head-neck junction are caused by serum metal ions generated from hip prostheses with metal-on-metal surfaces. Prophylaxis with antibiotics is recommended in the case of patients who underwent joint replacements less than two years ago, but also in the case of patients who are compromised from an immune point of view. Tranexamic acid has an efficiency demonstrated in several orthopedic studies in terms of reducing perioperative blood loss as well as the need for allogeneic blood transfusions.
