Qualitative Surface Characteristics of Epoxy Resin-Based Polymer Composites and the Role of Release Agents in the Molding Process

In this paper, the peculiarities of the effect of release agents on the surface roughness indexes of epoxy resin-based composites, as well as on the sample extraction from the mold are considered. The study is aimed at evaluating the influence of the type and properties of lubricants on the surface quality of the final product, which is of key importance for improving the performance characteristics of composite products. The study used molds treated with different types of lubricants (silicate glue, PVA glue, silicone grease glycerin, graphite), as well as methods of quantitative roughness assessment using a profilometer and optical microscopy method. The results showed significant differences in surface quality depending on the applied lubricant, which allows us to draw conclusions about the necessity to optimize lubricants for specific types of composites and molding conditions. The conducted research provides compelling arguments in favor of using silicone lubricants, particularly those produced domestically, as release agents when working with epoxy resin-based polymer composites during casting in steel molds.
