Biodiversity conservation is an ongoing and serious concern within crop protection. Populations of species that significantly affect crop yields must be managed in a way that is not only effective, but it is also consistent with our aim of promoting ecological sustainability in and around agricultural landscapes. The RNA interference (RNAi) mode of action represents an increasingly considered way toward sustainable management of agricultural insect pest species. The current body of RNAi risk assessment literature is still quite small, and it remains to be of limited utility, and often of limited relevance. Furthermore, very little experimental evidence exists to support the application of RNA insecticides within complex integrated pest management (IPM) programs, a potential cornerstone of agrobiodiversity conservation. Therefore, more relevant risk assessment studies, as well as studies concerning the use of RNAi as a tool within a broader IPM toolkit, are much needed. Finally, global conservation priorities must be weighed so that we may understand how to best develop and utilize RNAi technology to achieve our most pressing global “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs).
