Amazonian deforestations have received international attention and political pressure over recent years due to their environmental impact on local and global climates. The concern is real: from 1985 to 2021, the Brazilian Amazon lost 44.1 million hectares of forest. Deforestation is particularly intense in the state of Rondônia in northern Brazil, as land is cleared for cattle ranching, agriculture and urban areas. This process of deforestation in Rondônia is especially linked to the arrival of migrant settlers from the late 1960s and their interest in making the land profitable. This book chapter examines the history of land-use change in Rondônia as a cause of the process of vegetation loss. Using a mixed-methods approach, it highlights the specific aspects of deforestation linked to the historical background of the colonisation period with the creation of urban settlements. It aims to show that deforestation is a cultural legacy of the occupation of the territory; therefore, the need for ecological education is necessary to ensure greater changes and the protection of the forest.

摘要
