The chapter focuses on assessing how the South African systems implemented or failed to realise the rights of refugees and asylum seekers during the course of the pandemic. Refugees and asylum seekers, like any other immigrants, also contribute to the economic development of their host country, hence the need for them to be supported in their economic endeavours. The title of this chapter—A Bundle of Belongings Isn’t the Only Thing a Refugee Brings to His New Country—is a quote from a renowned author and scholar, Albert Einstein, who was a German-born theoretical physicist and Nobel Laureate. Forced from his home, Einstein sought refuge in the United States and settled in Princeton, NJ. As there were no programmes or aid agencies to ensure the safety of fellow refugees, Einstein took matters into his own hands. He and his wife made visa applications for other German Jews and personally vouched for refugees fleeing the Nazi rule. The implication of this famous quote from Einstein is that refugees should not be considered a burden in their country of arrival because they possess important skills and expertise, and if given an opportunity, they can make massive contributions towards the economic growth of their new country. It is in the interest of this chapter to share reflections on how South Africa has dealt with the plight of refugees and asylum seekers in terms of social relief initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic.
