Mining Companies’ Legal Duty to Safeguard Local Communities Against COVID-19: A South African Perspective

Health concerns in the mineral sector are not new. According to the literature, the mining sector has long been linked to health issues because either it is a direct source of chronic diseases or it contributes to the wide spread of epidemic and pandemic diseases. The first category, i.e. mining as a direct source of diseases, is connected to mining workplaces, termed occupational diseases, such as those affecting the respiratory organs, like lung diseases, cancer, and tuberculosis (TB).
