Environmental rights are human rights. Despite the difficulties in construing what ‘environmental rights’ are, it is indisputable that they play a significant role in the economic growth of African states as they embody most of the democratic values. Unlike other human rights, environmental rights are more directly linked to the economic aspect of sustainable development. This partly explains why the 1981 African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights blends environmental rights and development. However, little has been studied and written on the importance of environmental rights in fueling the economic development of African countries. Therefore, this chapter highlights the roles of environmental rights in accelerating the economic growth of African states.
