The business world is becoming increasingly networked: organizations engage in increasingly complex collaborations, such as global supply networks and service delivery networks. Consequently, organizations need to define their positions in these networks, both in intention and execution. At the same time, we see that the business world is becoming increasingly dynamic: the context in which collaborations function is prone to change more frequently, caused by global market changes, changing customer requirements, and rapid digital technology developments. Consequently, organizations have to anchor the ability to change in their core business DNA. These two developments imply that organizations must be able to define and operationalize their position in complex, dynamic networks. This requires an agile, outside-in approach at three interconnected levels: the business model level defining what to achieve, the business process level defining how to achieve this, and the business information system level defining how to support this. Many frameworks, methods, and architectures have been proposed that address aspects of the required approach, but few cover the complete business model to information system infrastructure spectrum. The few that do cover this spectrum often lead to very complex specifications, like in the field of enterprise architecture. This paper presents an approach that aims at supporting the complete spectrum without sacrificing conceptual elegance. The approach is based on the BASE/X framework that has been developed and tested with industry in the past decade-and-a-half. We present our learnings from this period.
